SPOTLIGHT #7: Marsha Eileen McDougal "Videographer & Breast Cancer Survivor"
As a Nashville, TN native, Marsha Eileen McDougal has definitely made an impact in her community. I met Marsha when I was a student at Pearl Cohn High School over 16 years ago. She was a student who stood out from the crowd because she was always polite, very intelligent and had the warmest smile.
One day when I was scrolling through Facebook in October 2016, I saw her post a video. I thought to myself, "Oh Cool, let's see what she is talking about today." Once she began to speak about her recent breast cancer news, I was totally shocked and saddened at the same time. There are many women and men who suffer from breast cancer everyday, but it's a different feeling when you find out someone you know is now experiencing it. We may sometimes think, "It will never happen to me" or "It will never happen to anyone I know." Then when it does, reality slaps you in the face to remind you that no matter who you are, it could happen to you and your loved ones too.
Based on research and case studies by Susan G. Komen:
One in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
Every 2 minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer.
In 2018, more than 260,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women and more than 2,500 cases in men in the U.S.
Although many of us were saddened to hear this news about Marsha, we were inspired by her willingness to share her journey through her Vlog. It documented her fight against breast cancer. She shared details on her hair journey and healthy eating throughout the process as well. She shared her story because often times many of us are afraid to share our struggles with each other. Not knowing there could be someone else who needs to hear it. Someone else who needs to know they're not alone.
Her videos were real, raw and authentic. She showed vulnerability and allowed us to be there with her every step of the way. This made us love her even more because she was genuine with her story. She has given so many people hope that they too can overcome unexpected obstacles in life. She taught us that Vlogging helped her cope with her breast cancer experience. We want her to know that her journey has given us all the encouragement and motivation to not only support others during difficult times, but to support ourselves.
I love how she addresses the black community, reminding us of how we are sometimes afraid to talk about our issues. We keep things bottled and buried inside as if our lives are perfect, but in reality, it's not perfect. We all experience good times and bad times, but most of us choose to only highlight the good times. She showed us that talking about our issues is necessary. I agree because I've recently understood the importance of talking about my own issues and struggles from the past. Sharing your story helps you progress towards positive results. If you keep it all inside, it will manifest and bring on even more problems mentally and physically.
I appreciate her for giving us the opportunity to not only hear her story, but to feel it as well. I shed many tears, but also graced many smiles. It's never easy to share delicate life details, but once you do you'll learn that it not only helps others but it helps ourselves as well.
I am very thankful to have met her several years ago and to still be blessed with her presence. Her positivity, kindness and talent is taking her to new levels. I know her journey hasn't been easy, but her determination and undeniable work ethic hasn't gone unnoticed.
